As I watch and listen to the Republican Party organized protest against the reform of our health care system, I am often struck by the disconnect between the protesters and their economic status and plight and the realities of who would benefit the most from improving our health care system and making it more affordable for all Americans.
It seems absurd to me that so many poor white people, many who don't have or cant afford health insurance themselves are campaigning against making health insurance more affordable for all Americans.
I ask myself is it ignorance, or is it some misguided sense that by trying to keep some poor black or Latino from being able to get insurance for themselves and their family, that they are performing some patriotic duty to this country that I don't see or understand? Or even worse it is simply misplaced anger caused by racism and bigotry.
There are over 26,400,000 poor white people who live in poverty which is twice the number of poor African Americans, and that 26,400,00 poor white people is greater than both the number poor African Americans and poor Latinos who receive any type of public assistance combined.
I was particularly struck by the number of white people that do not understand the difference in public and private health care or insurance. Many of the white protesters especially the elderly ones even admitted that they needed Medicaid and Medicare both of which are public health insurance programs that depend on taxes being paid to the Federal Government.
I would really appreciate some one, any one to explain to me especially those who decry socialism whether we could or should end any and all social programs or governmental aid to needy American citizens. And what would happen to those people or families that the government now helps.
What do we do about all of the premature babies, teen pregnancies, crippled, deformed, crazy, mentally ill and imbalanced people , the old and disabled, and the deaf, dumb and blind people in this country.
Also those Americans dealing with the daily pain of systemic disease and chronic illnesses like Diabetes HIV and all forms of Cancer?
